Who Holds the Truth of Creation?—A Deep Dive for Worldbuilding [Cosmogony]

Defining Perfect Knowledge

Someone possessing Perfect Knowledge has the absolute and full understanding and knowledge of objective truth.  He or she is incapable of being wrong or mistake and is not reliant on theories or faith.

Consider that no one in our world has Perfect Knowledge.  Everyone, even atheists, are reliant upon a theory, a faith, or a belief.  In your fantasy world, this may be the case, but doesn’t have to be.

Possible Answers

1) You have Perfect Knowledge but No One Else

This fits well into your role as Worldbuilder.  You create the world and therefore you have Perfect Knowledge of its origin.

Just because you are fulfilling the practical role of Creator doesn’t mean there can’t be an in-world creator or creators.

Because no one in your world has Perfect Knowledge, just like in our world, you may need to develop various interpretations of reality.  These may manifest as religious, superstitions, philosophies, scholarly schools of thought, etc.

2) Some or All Peoples of Your World have at Least Partial Perfect Knowledge

Your role as Worldbuilder is identical to Option 1.

Why would some people know and others not know the origins of the universe?

  1. Wouldn’t those who do know illuminate those who don’t?
    1. Knowledge is Power
    2. By sharing knowledge, those who know might dilute their power
    3. Yet they might opt to share anyway for other reasons, such as evangelism
    4. There are many other possible justifications, but “Knowledge is Power” is quite sufficient given our own history
  2. Wouldn’t those who don’t know seek out those who do?
    1. How can those who don’t know be sure that those who do know actually know?
      1. Since those who don’t know don’t have Perfect Knowledge, they also don’t have Perfect Knowledge that those who do know actually know
    2. Perfect Knowledge doesn’t equal Perfect Honesty
      1. Those who don’t know may distrust those who do, especially if there is any bad blood between them

How do those who know gain that knowledge?

The most common answer is that such a people are either unaging or immortal.  Some or all of them were actually alive when the world was created… and may be still alive today.  If they aren’t, the second-hand knowledge while not Perfect, is much more accurate than it otherwise might be.

Yet witnessing creation doesn’t necessarily establish Perfect Knowledge.  After all, presumably such a people didn’t participate in the actual creation—they were products of it.  Thus even if they witnessed some or all of creation, they are still vulnerable to observation bias.  They might misunderstand what they saw and be unaware or uneducated on what they did not see.

Critical Note:  If you have an unaging species in a world with a very short history, you might be effectively forcing that people to have some degree of Perfect Knowledge.

3) No One has Perfect Knowledge, not even You

This may be the toughest choice because you are denying yourself, the worldbuilder, Perfect Knowledge of your creation.

Since nothing must be true, anything could be true.  Be careful to keep good notes to ensure consistency, especially of your world’s natural laws.  Otherwise, you might end up with nonsensical world behavior (such as sails disappearing beneath the horizon of a flat world) or absurd beliefs.

A major reason to consider this option is if your world is Cyclical rather than Linear because the origin of the world, if there even was one, is lost to the sands of time.  This topic will be covered in more depth in the next video.

Do you share Perfect Knowledge with your Audience?

This question has minimal effect on your actual worldbuilding, but it will have a huge impact on your overall project.
